Learning to Serve

Last term the Ruth House girls became involved with service projects. Every Saturday some Amazima students left the campus and went to the village to perform service projects for especially needy families. On one project 12 of the Ruth House girls and other Amazima students went to help a blind, elderly gentleman with a 15-year old granddaughter who has kidney and pancreas health issues.

When the girls returned from the service project they were on cloud nine. They felt so good about what they had done. They talked of carrying water, washing dishes, and sweeping the compound. They spoke of the gentleman's needs and how they were able to care for him. They saw how delighted he was that they came. His delight and happiness filled them with joy and a desire to serve him. They recognized that even though they come from extreme poverty, there are those who have even more needs than they.

The remaining 12 girls of Ruth House were able to go on other service projects throughout the term. Their responses to the opportunity to serve were the same. When the girls are serving and giving their joy overflows. The smiles come easily. They laugh. They are learning about the sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes from serving others.

This term in our devotions we are trying to continue the lessons they are learning on service projects. We have handed out dolls to each of our rooms, each doll being named after the room – Risen, Unique, True, and Holy.  We gave a description of the doll’s situation that related to the theme of the week’s devotions, which was "fear." In our devotions we talked about why we do not need to fear because of God's power, grace, and mercy. The description of the doll's situation related to incidents the Ruth House girls had experienced in their villages this past term break: the doll is a 14-year-old girl who is fearing because of a threat of kidnappings in her village.

Here are the four dolls we gave to the rooms

We grouped the girls according to their rooms and told them to write down ideas of how they could serve and minister to their doll’s fears, such as what songs could they play for her, what words could they say to her, what verses could they share with her, etc.  This past Sunday night the rooms presented their ideas on how to serve their dolls at our house meeting.

The dolls will remain in the rooms throughout the week.  Each Friday this term we plan to give the girls a new situation that the doll is experiencing related to the theme of that week’s devotions. At each Sunday night house meeting, the rooms will present their solutions for how they can minister to the dolls' needs. We hope this activity will provide the girls with a chance to apply the devotion lessons and continue to learn how they can discover ways to serve others in need.
